Linux Mint 22 “Wilma” is a long-term support release with security updates and software upgrades guaranteed until April 2029. Based on Ubuntu 24.04 (Noble Numbat) and powered by Linux kernel 6.8, Linux Mint 22 brings updated software, modern components and enhanced language support. The installer optimises disk space by removing unused language packs after installation, while keeping essential language packs (including English, German, Spanish, French, Russian, Portuguese, Dutch and Italian) directly on the ISO image — so you can install offline in your preferred language. Notable improvements in Linux Mint 22 include PipeWire as the default sound server (replacing PulseAudio for lower latency and better Bluetooth compatibility), full GTK4 theme support, JXL image support in the Pix viewer, and improved HiDPI rendering throughout the system. Thunderbird remains available as a native .deb package — unlike in Ubuntu, where it has moved to Snap — and the new GNOME Online Accounts GTK component ensures compatibility across Cinnamon, MATE and Xfce desktop environments. Several GNOME applications have been downgraded to GTK3 to preserve system theme support, which is a core part of the Linux Mint experience.
In addition, Linux Mint 22 — like its predecessor Mint 21 — disables the use of Snapd via APT by default, due to security concerns and the closed-source nature of the Snap Store. The main developer of Linux Mint has previously expressed strong reservations about Canonical’s Snap implementation (read more):
Applications in this store cannot be patched or pinned. You can’t audit them, hold them, modify them or even point snap to a different store. You have as much empowerment with this as if you were using proprietary software, i.e. none. This is in effect similar to a commercial proprietary solution, but with two major differences: it runs as root, and it installs itself without asking you.
