Linux Mint is next to big names like Ubuntu and Debian one of the most popular Linux distributions. Especially in the Netherlands and Belgium Mint is after Ubuntu the most chosen Linux distribution. Linux Mint is especially popular among old Windows users, because the desktop environment looks a lot like Microsoft Windows. Besides the LMDE version which is based on Debian instead of Ubuntu, Linux Mint is released with 3 different desktop environments, namely Cinnamon, MATE and Xfce. We notice among our customers that Linux Mint Cinnamon is the most popular choice.
If you want to start with Linux Mint as a beginner you don’t have to rely on your own knowledge and skills. There is plenty of documentation and there are many user groups for Mint. Linux Mint has a very large English speaking community that likes to help beginning Linux Mint users. The embedded Software Manager (Store), which is full of popular and free apps, allows you to easily install applications on your Linux Mint laptop or desktop.
Linux Mint 22 “Wilma” is a long-term support release with support until 2029, featuring updated software, modern components, and enhanced language support. It optimizes disk space by removing unnecessary language packs post-installation and includes essential language packs on the ISO image. Based on Ubuntu 24.04, it includes kernel version 6.8 and Pipewire as the default sound server. Significant improvements include support for GTK4 themes, JXL in Pix, and enhanced HiDPI support. Notable changes are the retention of Thunderbird as a .deb package and the introduction of GNOME Online Accounts GTK to maintain compatibility across desktop environments. Several GNOME applications were downgraded to GTK3 to ensure theme compatibility.
In addition, in Mint version 22 as wel as the previous 21 version, the use of Snapd via APT is disabled by default due to (potential) security risks and acting as closed software. The main developer of Linux Mint has already expressed his concerns about Snapd from Ubuntu Canonical (read more):
Applications in this store cannot be patched, or pinned. You can’t audit them, hold them, modify them or even point snap to a different store. You’ve as much empowerment with this as if you were using proprietary software, i.e. none. This is in effect similar to a commercial proprietary solution, but with two major differences: It runs as root, and it installs itself without asking you.
